TerraTread Partners with Metroparks To Deliver Innovative, Unique Solutions

If you had to make a list of all the elements that are crucial for residents in a particular community, quality of life would be right at the top.

This is true both in terms of rural environments but especially in urban ones, where people enjoy spending their free time exploring all that the great outdoors has to offer. If someone spends an afternoon in the metroparks, they don’t want to have to worry about navigation thanks to woefully outdated pedestrian bridges, boardwalks, foot bridges, or other elements.

Thankfully, they don’t have to. In stark contrast to what people are probably used to, TerraTread is a solution that requires no maintenance while offering a 60-year lifespan. You’re talking about a pedestrian bridge or boardwalk capable of carrying not only people, but park and emergency vehicles as well.

Envision a boardwalk or pedestrian bridge that can effortlessly span over water, all while curving with your environment. It’s one that doesn’t detract from the surrounding area, but that contributes to it enormously.

What you’re picturing is all that TerraTread has to offer. This is true in a wide range of different ways, all of which are worth exploring.

An Overview of TerraTread

TerraTread is a solution that can be fully customized to your park’s unique environment. Our concrete boardwalks, pedestrian bridges, and related options are known for their long lifespan. Thanks to TerraTread, your natural walkways and trails can fully establish themselves as part of a larger whole. This is especially important when compared to wood materials, which are more invasive as they are deconstructed and reconstructed.

By design, TerraTread is more flexible, more versatile, and infinitely more durable.

From an aesthetic perspective, TerraTread has a fine wood texture on each of its treads. Those treads and beams are fully engineered to provide the smoothest possible cycling and walking experience. Bringing together the best in both strength and longevity, TerraTread’s attractive pedestrian bridges and concrete boardwalks will make your next park project something that patrons will truly admire for decades.

Just a few of the major benefits of TerraTread include but are not limited to ones like:

What are a few examples of these benefits in action? See below!

The TerraTread Partnership with Metroparks

The Oaks Connector: Metroparks Toledo

We recently worked with Metroparks Toledo on a large project, showcasing the benefits of TerraTread. Our professional team helped engineer a maintenance-free system for wetland boardwalks and overlooks, pedestrian bridges, and pathways called the Oak Openings Connector.

The Oak Openings Connector trail was approximately 500 linear feet of boardwalk. They allowed the park guests to walk through areas that would be otherwise flooded. The boardwalk, built in 2018, features 19’6’ beams installed on helical piles. It also includes TerraTread’s ADA curb to protect those with disabilities

The Manhattan Marsh: Metroparks Toledo

Manhattan Marsh features more than 1300 linear feet of boardwalk installed over the waters of the marsh. This project featured three different sections of boardwalk installation. Since these boardwalks were over water, they were designed to be built from the top down. Our techniques allowed the contractor to bring his equipment onto the boardwalk itself and build out into the marsh. This project was part of the Metroparks Toledo plan to have everyone in Lucas County within minutes of a Metropark.

This project also connected the once unusable marsh with a nearby school. As a result of our efforts, the children to connect with nature. Previously, this project was difficult, as the park is located in the inner city of Toledo; however, our system delivered a complete solution.

Whiskey Island: Cleveland Metroparks

Whiskey Island features more than 394 linear feet of boardwalk. It has been installed and designed to carry guests from Whiskey Island Park to Wendy Park. Concrete foundations were poured to cantilever the boardwalk away from the hillside and the buried utilities. This boardwalk features curved custom treads to contour to the environment, showcasing our customizability.

These projects are just a few of the many, many examples of how the TerraTread system that encompasses pedestrian bridges, boardwalks, and more can be utilized. This is true both in terms of offering a dramatic upgrade to parks and recreation areas, and to create visually striking and accessible designs that absolutely everyone in a community can enjoy. It’s also an option that is significantly more cost-effective than people realize once long-term maintenance costs (or a lack thereof) are taken into consideration.
